Academic system

What keeps my status and grades intact?

Stay full-time for immigration status, treat the syllabus as a contract, and know add/drop and integrity rules—then use Semester guide for this term’s dates. Not Instagram advice.

Rules 0/5

Need it when

  • Before registration or add/drop
  • When you feel behind mid-semester
  • Before booking travel over exams

Write your school’s full-time credit minimum before you drop or add any class.

Mark at least three status rules (0/5 so far)—especially full-time and syllabus.

Five rules that protect status and grades

Tap each when you understand it. Term dates and travel blackouts live in Semester guide—not here.

Where to verify

Named sources—not group-chat folklore

  • Program handbook + academic calendar

    Open

Credits, progression, exam weeks, and official holidays. Import dates into Semester guide—not a friend’s Notion.

  • International office / DSO

Only they can authorize a reduced course load or explain how online credits count toward full time.

  • Syllabus + LMS (Canvas / Blackboard)

Weights, late policies, and honor code for each course. Download PDFs while you still have access.

  • Writing center / tutoring / advising

    Open

Free help beats failing a core course. Find peers via Study groups after you know collaboration rules.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping below full time without written authorization

Immigration status and tuition refunds are separate. Ask the DSO before the drop is final.

  • Booking travel over midterms or finals

Semester guide owns travel blackouts. This lesson is the rule: exams beat cheap flights.

  • Treating the syllabus as optional reading

Grade disputes without the syllabus PDF are much harder. Save it day one.

  • Sharing graded answer keys in group chats

Study groups are for concepts and teach-back—not dumping solutions to homework still being graded.

  • Waiting until probation to ask for help

Office hours, tutoring, and disability/accessibility services work best early—not after the W deadline.

Semester guide

Put this term’s add/drop, midterms, finals, and travel blackouts on one calendar. This lesson stays about the rules—not the dates.
