Prove the money

Count only awarded money

Scholarships, fee waivers, and assistantships count for planning only after you have a written award. Verbal “you will get aid” from a consultancy does not fund an I-20.

  • List each award with amount, duration, and conditions.
  • Remove any unconfirmed promise from your funding total.
  • In the stack below, leave “proven” off until the letter arrives.

Find school aid

Search school and department aid

Start on each shortlist school’s graduate funding page and the department site for TA/GA/RA notes. Deadlines often sit before the general application deadline.

  • Bookmark funding + assistantship pages for every shortlist school.
  • Email the graduate coordinator once with a specific question—not a mass template to 40 professors.

TA / GA / RA ask (after you research)

Assistantships are competitive and department-specific. Ask only after you know the lab or course area, and never pay anyone to “arrange” a TA.

  • Read faculty pages; mention one paper or course in a short email.
  • Ask the department how continuing students get TA appointments.
  • Keep the reply; do not treat interest as a funding guarantee.

Borrow carefully

India education loan checklist

If you need a loan, compare public-sector and private lenders on collateral, margin money, disbursement to the university, and forex charges. Start after you have admits—not before shortlisting.

  • Collect admit letter, fee structure, KYC, co-applicant docs, and collateral papers.
  • Ask when the lender remits tuition (and whether it matches the I-20 / SEVIS timeline).
  • Keep sanction letter PDF for visa evidence when the consulate accepts it.

Move the money

Forex and tuition payment sequence

Plan who pays the SEVIS fee, visa fee, deposit, and first tuition installment. Use bank/forex channels that give remittance proof—not informal cash chains.

  • Map dates: deposit → I-20 → I-901 SEVIS → visa fee → travel funds.
  • Prefer university wire instructions from the official bill or portal.
  • Save every SWIFT/UPI/forex receipt with the student name matching the I-20.

Protect registration

Health forms and insurance holds

Complete the school health portal and any mandatory insurance before registration holds block classes. India travel insurance often fails U.S. waiver rules.

  • Upload immunizations the school lists.
  • Buy or waive insurance only against the school’s written minimums.
