I-20 and SEVIS before interview day
You cannot finish a clean interview folder without a signed I-20 and FMJfee receipt.
Nobody can sell a guaranteed visa. Pay SEVIS, MRV, and appointments only on official sites. Fake funds and memorized scripts are common refusal reasons.
Interview checklist
Tick only when the document or task is actually done.
Practice themes
Speak for about a minute each—then stop memorizing.
Why this university / program?
Officers check that you researched a real academic plan—not a random admit.
- Name 1–2 concrete program features (course, lab, track).
- Link them to your past degree or work.
- Say why this school over a vague “US is best.”
Avoid · Reading a pasted consultancy paragraph about rankings only.
Who pays, and how much is liquid?
Your finances must match the I-20 without sudden unexplained deposits.
- State sponsor vs loan vs savings clearly.
- Know tuition + living for year one in round numbers.
- Bring proof that matches what you say.
Avoid · Claiming a relative will “arrange later” with no documents.
What after the degree?
F-1 is temporary. Show a plausible plan without sounding like you are immigrating tomorrow.
- Skills you will bring home or to a defined career path.
- Family or professional ties in India if asked.
- Honest: OPT is possible but not a promise of a green card.
Avoid · “I will settle in the US forever” as the opening line.
Gaps, backlogs, or major changes?
Be ready if your transcript or major switch looks inconsistent.
- Explain backlogs briefly with what you improved.
- If changing fields, show bridge courses or projects.
Avoid · Blaming universities or inventing excuses.
Red flags
Memorized scripts
Officers hear the same lines all day. Speak from your real shortlist and funding pack.
Borrowed / parking funds
Short-term deposits that vanish after the interview can destroy credibility and future applications.
Slot agents and “inside contacts”
Pay fees only on official sites. Anyone selling a guaranteed stamp is scamming you.
DS-160 ≠ interview answers
Employer, address, and travel history must match what you typed. Fix DS-160 before the interview if something changed.
