Driver's license
Do I need a state license—or just better ID?
A state license is optional for many transit cities—useful as ID and for car-heavy campuses, not a week-one must. DMV documents and scripts live in the Drivers license service.
Need it when
- Your city is car-dependent
- You need a stronger secondary ID
- Insurance quotes before buying a car
Try transit first unless your commute or lease truly needs a car—insurance quotes before you buy.
Write why you need a license (ID only · car commute · internship)—or stay on transit for now.
Mark at least three concepts (0/5)—especially need, insurance, and foreign limits.

Common mistakes
Car before insurance quotes
Quote coverage first—cost can kill the “cheap used car” plan.
Assuming home licence lasts forever
State grace periods end. Check your DMV before relying on it.
Using this page as a DMV checklist
Drivers license service owns documents and appointment steps.
Skipping transit for week one
Many campuses work without a car—license can wait until you need it.
